MIALS is a volunteer based program, developed in 2004 by Mayne Islanders who envisioned a way of life where neighbours are helping neighbours. We connect older adults in need of assistance with our group of volunteers that are willing and able to offer that level of assistance – to enhance their quality of life, to stay active, independent, and integrated in their community.
We are able to so by way of some main programs and offerings such as: Creative Cafe- A free drop-in afternoon that hosts a variety of activities including local field trips, book nook, community garden, games, music, and monthly mid-day movies. Everyone is welcome, Creative Cafe is a dementia and Alzheimer's friendly space. Collective Care- A support group open to anyone on Mayne. Support focuses on life transitions, grief and dementia/Alzihmers through expressive arts therapy activities and advocacy. Collective Care is open to both carers and clients and is a free offering. Meals on Wheels- Low-cost, home-style and nutritious meals available 3 times a week for those with disability, recovering from illness, surgery, and those who are unable to cook. Volunteer Driving- Get where you need to go! We have volunteers that drive clients to errands, social visits, doctor's appointments and more. Day Tripper Bus Program- A fun bus trip available to anyone regardless of age on Mayne! We go into Sidney and Victoria every Tuesday for medical appointments, hospital appointments, tests, shopping, swimming, social visits, or just exploring. The Day Tripper Bus receives priority loading to ensure there are no missed ferries and many times we can arrange door-to-door service. One on One- We have volunteers who help around homes, gardens, pick up groceries, take out recycling, pick out a book from the library (and willing to read!), provide social respite care for family/carers, or just to share social time over a cup of tea or a walk around the neighbourhood. Lunch Bunch- A community based, home style meal with guest speakers and presentations open to all Mayne Islanders. Lunch includes dessert, and there are always vegetarian and gluten free options available. GenPal Program- Kids are paired with our older generations to share letters throughout the school year to foster intergenerational connection.
